Mount Rainier is Hyattsville's southern counterpart, a little closer to DC on Route 1. In fact, it borders DC's Eastern Avenue.  Mount Rainier offers more affordable homes and an arts district, and ample bungalows and Victorians. The commercial core of Mount Rainier is centered along Route 1 and 34th Street. Menkiti Group is renovating part of the commercial core and the neighborhood is attracting more residents and businesses.

 

Restaurants, Retail, and Entertainment

With the soul of Mount Rainier situated along Route 1, residents and visitors can enjoy places like vegan eateries Dodah's Kitchen and Sweet & Natural; Little Minder Taco; Pennyroyal Station, a new American restaurant; and Potomac Fish House, offering fresh and fried fish. The neighborhood also has staples such as salons, a variety, small grocery stores, an insurance agency, a doggy daycare, and a police station. Cakes By Gene is a boutique custom cake business that has made some of the most creative cakes around.

Transportation

Route 1 (Rhode Island Ave) takes residents to DC. Eastern Ave provides access to Silver Spring and Takoma Park. College Park and the big box retailers immediately north in Beltsville can be accessed via Route 1. Bus routes along the main arteries are the closest the neighborhood comes to mass transit.
